What We Do

What We Do

Creating and supporting a diverse student body

We believe that a student body with diverse interests and experiences, intellectual and cultural perspectives will enrich the learning environment for everyone. In order to make that happen, we offer events, school visits, advising, tours and other resources designed to attract, prepare, and increase the number of racially and ethnically underrepresented students who attend the UW.

The office of Multicultural Outreach and Recruitment (MOR) is a program of the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity (OMA&D).

Our Mission

We identify, attract and recruit a diverse student body to the University of Washington to help create an intellectually and culturally vibrant student body.

Our Work

We are dedicated to creating a welcoming and respectful learning environment that promotes equitable access and opportunity for all students to succeed at the University of Washington. MOR initiatives focus on 9th – 12th grade high school and 2-year college students from low-income and/or first-generation backgrounds.

Honoring Place

The University of Washington acknowledges the Coast Salish peoples of this land, the land which touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations.

AREAS OF FOCUS

Early Outreach

We know that early awareness and knowledge are key to college attainment. Our team visits high schools throughout Washington state with high rates of students on free or reduced lunch and hosts early outreach affinity-based conferences to encourage, motivate, and empower diverse students to pursue higher education, and give them the opportunity to experience the UW.

Recruitment

MOR focuses on culturally relevant practices proven to assist low-income, first-generation and historically underrepresented students through the admissions process. This includes conferences and high school visits across Washington, as well as individualized admissions counseling. MOR counselors support students in writing personal statements, provide guidance on completing applications and share financial aid resources.

Enrollment

Once admitted, MOR helps students and families prepare themselves for their Husky journey, including confirming their admissions offer, securing housing and registering for new student orientation. We host regional celebratory events for all admitted underrepresented students and their families and invite them to campus. And, we connect them with appropriate student services to ensure a successful matriculation to the UW.
